I've started a blog!
Surprisingly, I've found myself getting back into actually enjoying blogs recently. I say 'surprising' because when it comes to the digital content I've been consuming over the years, blogs have always ranked pretty low on my list. I mean, if I could quantify my social media consumption for the better part of the 2010s, it'll probably look a little like this:
- Instagram, YouTube (50%) — This embarrassingly used to be all the content I consumed at one point, I'll admit
- Podcasts (35 - 40%) — Slowly and surely becoming my absolute favourite way to consume content, keep up-to-date with the news, listen to think pieces, even unwind!
- LinkedIn (5%) — Frankly, I'm only ever particularly active on LinkedIn when I'm about to bust out some #careermoves
- Others: Pinterest, Facebook (5%) — I will say that because my 9-to-5 heavily involves social media, I really don't use or enjoy Facebook outside of work
A few months ago, nudged by a need to make some serious lifestyle changes, I became intrigued by minimalism and started following a few bloggers in the space.
Not only was I inspired by the wealth of easy-to-adopt tips that were relatable in a way that traditional magazines sometimes fail to be, but it also struck me how much more frank people could be on their blogs when they weren't: a) confined to an Instagram-capped word limit or b) felt the need to curate what they were feeling or presenting.
(UPDATE: My foray into minimalism didn't last very long, but my belated appreciation of blogs did.)
I think we've reached a point in content/social media where we've become so saturated with curated filtered-ness, that there is something very nostalgic and refreshing about the way people candidly journal and write on their blogs. But are blogs still a thing? I'm not sure.
Anyhoos, something fun and new for me to sink my teeth into this 2020: I'm making it one of my new year to-dos to start blogging! Although I will admit, as I'm about to hit 'publish' on this, I'm greeted by an all-too-familiar flashback of 14-year-old Sarah punching furiously away on her Blogspot circa 2005. Cringe.
Out of curiosity: does anyone out there still read blogs? And if yes, what kind of blogs do you follow and what keeps you coming back for more content?Add a comment
